If you’re reading this, it means I’ve finally got my blog set up and in a state
that I don’t mind people seeing it. I first just downloaded bog standard Hugo
and started out. Then I decided that as I’m using GitLab Pages I’d be better
off cloning their Hugo Pages repo as that would be an easier starting point,
so I started over from there. Then I found this theme. Then I looked closer
at the config.toml file, and decided I didn’t understand Hugo, and I wanted
to start with a clean slate. Then I discovered after-dark’s install script,
which allowed me to do just that. So, had a few false starts, but I got there
in the end.
I always seem to (inadvertantly) choose to do things the hard way. There were a couple of gotchas (CI builder didn’t pull down the theme submodule, and then when I configured it to, it turned its nose up at GitHub’s SSL cert, so I configured the submodule ref to use the git protocol over the http one). At least in this case, the hard way definitely helped get me comfortable with how GitLab and Hugo work, so it was time well spent.
I’m not sure of the purpose of this blog yet. I originally wanted to make this about Functional Programming, given that I’ve only had experience in Imperative and Object Oriented, but why restrict myself? There are lots of uses for this, from it acting as my own personal knowledge base, to sharpening up my writing skills.
